Just finished reading . . . Happy Ending

Happy Ending (Men of Smithfield series, book 2) by LB Gregg (M/M)-EBOOK Novella

I won a copy of Happy Ending over at Lisabea’s Nose in a Book (LB’s personal book blog) and was so excited, since this was at the top of my tbb list. It meant that I wouldn’t have to wait for payday to get my hot little hands on it, since the last week of the month usually means “book buying moratorium” over here at Chez Renee. (The agony!)

Here is a book description from the author’s site:

All Seth really wanted was a simple massage — was that too much to ask? When his usual therapist is replaced by a sexy young masseur, Seth finds himself obsessed with the unpredictable — and wholly inappropriate — David Cooke. Pushed to the breaking point by forces both mysterious and not so mysterious, Seth must lose his rigid control to find the happy ending both he and David deserve.

Happy Ending by LB Gregg
Told in first person pov by Seth, this book was a quick, fun read. I loved hearing Seth’s thoughts and perspectives on things, even when they had me shaking my head. You see, Seth is something we don’t get a lot of in first person pov: an alpha male. And LB did a great job of giving his voice a true alpha personality: impatient, bossy, sometimes a little judgemental, but, also: passionate, forthright, and intensely loyal and protective to those he cares about. I loved how he’d make hard-assed observations in the narrative, then do something right after that would reveal his deeper (and softer) emotions.

David was also a unique character. Seth’s first impression deems David to be a tattooed and pierced hippy-boy massage therapist (after living in Santa Cruz for a few years, and spending quite a bit of time at the acupuncture school/clinic, I can totally picture him!) but, of course, there’s more to him than meets the eye. David is family-oriented, extremely intelligent and hardworking, and more than a little bit sexy. (He also knows how to make with the dirty talk, which gives him BIG POINTS in my book. ;-) )

The story was entertaining, with these two coming together amid the newness of Seth’s guardianship of his niece, the healing over the loss of his sister, and the reappearance of his ex-lover. Happy Ending was a hero-oriented romance, where the events that happened gave insight into both David’s and Seth’s characters.

Happy Ending is available at Aspen Mountain Press in ebook format, and will have an upcoming print release as part of the Smart Ass series by MLR Press. Gobsmacked (Men of Smithfield series, book 1) is available in ebook format from Aspen Mountain Press, and was released last week in print format as part of MLR Press’ Smart Ass: Close Quarters.

Here’s what LB said about the untitled Men of Smithfield III (due out October 2009) in a recent blog post:

My POV character, Michael, is an English teacher and drama coach at swanky Dalton Prep (located in Smithfield, natch). Unfortunately for Michael, his former boss and one time fling, security specialist and former marine Max Douglas, is on the scene–hired to protect a high profile student. Let’s just say that the artsy Michael and the militant Max have different styles of leadership.

I’ll be looking forward to MoS III this fall. :-)

Renee~I’m so glad you enjoyed HE. It’s a little whippersnapper– but I adore Seth. I may actually have a secret crush on my bone-headed alpha.

I think I need to write longer stories though!

    Cheers to LB!

How hard was it to write a first POV of an alpha male?

KB~Surprisingly, Seth was an easy character to slip into. I’m thinking that perhaps Alpha is more my thing than beta!
      :)

Have fun on that trip, doll. And look for your present when you return.

I adored this one, David was so sweet and Seth was so stoic. Two of my favorite characters. :)
