*comes back from Book Smugglers* Good for you for persisting! It’s hard for me to even imagine reading it for the first after having seen the movie. While the movie was an amazing adaptation of the book, it’s also a completely different experience, particularly in pacing and immersion (as you noted in your post).
I remain amazed at writers who can create such vividly realized worlds.

What Chris said! ;P
I’m glad you didn’t give up on this book. I know I loved reading it the first time and even more through re-reads. Afterwards I had to read the whole trilogy… and couldn’t stop from getting into the Indexes where there is even more information about this amazing world Tolkien created.
For me, the movies were awesome, but there’s nothing like reading the books. Great review!

Well done you for persisting! I haven’t read it since I was a teenager – I’d actually be scared too in case I found them harder to read than the first time
I know, a sacrilegeous thought!
Oh, you’re listening to Lynn Flewelling’s book. I have the first on my TBR list and so look forward to hearing what you think
