Maya Banks: Be with Me-EBOOK 12/30/8

• I enjoyed this retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, though it was a little slow at times. The setting and cultures were really interesting. I just wanted Scarlet and Liall to get on the same (book) page, and things kept happening to keep them apart. This story is definitely the beginning of a longer tale. While it didn’t blow my socks off, I will be looking forward to the next installment, Mariners Luck.

Ally Blue: What Hides Inside (Bay City Paranormal Investigations series, book 2)-EBOOK 12/25/8

• Another excellent installment of the BCPI series. It really has some great horror elements, and the relationship between Sam and Bo has been fascinating to see develop — especially with the introduction/complication of Dean in this one!

Naomi Novik: Victory of Eagles (Temeraire series, book 4)-AUDIOBOOK 12/24/8. Print excerpt on author’s site.

• I forget between books how great this series is. I just love the relationship between Will and Temeraire. VoE focuses on the ugliness of war, something historicals and fantasy novels often gloss over, favoring the glory and romance. It was a much harder read. Will is really put thru the wringer in VoE, but he is so honorable throughout. NN focuses much more on the Dragons’ perspectives in VoE, which I really love!

• I’m really enjoying this series! I loved Faith’s inner-strength, and Vaughn’s intensity. Already looking forward to Judd and Brena’s book. Burning question: when is Hawke’s story going to be told?

JL Langley: With Love (With or Without series, prequel novella) (M/M) EBOOK 12/22/8

• While not directly related to the With or Without series storyline, it does take place in the same world of werewolves and “destined mates.” It was a very sweet story. I really liked Lainey’s combination of strength and vulnerability. (I feel like I say this about all of JLL’s characters, but she really does do this kind of characterizationso well.)

Stephanie Laurens: The Taste of Innocence (The Cynsters series, book 14) by . AUDIOBOOK 12/18/8. Print excerpt on author’s site.

• Wow. What a great read/listen. The first half of the story was an amazing courtship of the senses. The second half was just as satisfying. It focused on the relationship that results from that courtship, as well as an absorbing mystery. I jumped from book 3 to book 14 in this series, and while book 3 didn’t really blow me away, #14 now makes me want to go back and see what I’ve missed in books 4-13.

•  Within the first few pages of starting a book, I knew it was going to be a great read. The Psy-Changeling world is fascinating, Sascha is a sympathetic character, and her chemistry with Lucas is great! I’ve already requested book 2, Visions of Heat from the library.

Gena Showalter: The Darkest Night (Lords of the Underworld, book 1) 12/15/8. Excerpt on author’s site.

• A fun paranormal romance. I’ve had this in my TBR pile for ages, I’m glad I finally read it, but it didn’t rock my world. I really liked the Pandora’s Box mythology. I’ll definitely read book 2 when I can get around to it.

Cassandra Clare: City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments series, book 1)-AUDIOBOOK 10/25/8. Young Adult novel. Excerpt on author’s site. For more about City of Bones, check out my post. 

• CoB was a fun dark fantasy YA, with Shadow Hunters fighting demons, vampires, and werewolves in NYC. I really liked Clary, Simon and Jace. Sometimes the language felt a little overblown, but it was hard to tell if it was the book, or the narrator that made it feel that way. Tho’ I liked that the narrator actually sounded like a young girl, not an adult. At the end, there was a truly WTF twist, but in all, I liked the story well enough that I requested book 2, City of Ashes from the library.

• Jeanne Stein’s prose is spare, but effectively conveys Anna’s emotions and actions. The plot unfolds in a seemingly effortless way that is a testament to what a great writer JS is. I love how Anna, 6 months out from the events that changed her life and made her into a vampire, continues to process (and not always accept) what it means to be a vampire.

Stephanie Laurens: Scandal’s Bride (Cynster series, book 3) 12/9/8. Excerpt on author’s site.

• I don’t know if this book was weaker than the previous 2 in the Cynster series, or if I’ve just overdone the Stephanie Laurens. I’ll definitely read more of the series, tho’ I think I’ll just read the ones that especially catch my interest. I really liked Richard (Scandal) and Catriona was interesting, but the prose seemed especially purple (even more than I expected!)

Sarah Vowell: Assassination Vacation-BOOK CLUB 12/7/8

• A fascinating read about the assassinations of Presidents Lincoln, Garfield, and McKinley. This book is much more history intensive and political than the last book I had read by her. The connections she makes between historical and current events are absorbing and sometimes chilling.

Margaret Maron: Bootlegger’s Daughter (Judge Deborah Knott series, book 1)-AUDIOBOOK 12/7/8

• A promising start to a new mystery series, though I wasn’t blown away. I found CJ Critt’s narration distracting, because I so closely identify her with the Stephanie Plum series. (My problem, not hers.) I’ll read or listen to the next one if I can get it at the library. I liked Deborah. She was compassionate, but tough. The North Carolina setting was interesting.

AJ Menden: Phenomenal Girl 5 12/6/8. Excerpt on author’s site.

• What a fun read! Young superhero Phenomenal Girl 5, gets her big break as the assistant to The Reincarnationist, sexy, older reclusive superhero. The sparks fly, of course, amid battles, evil plots, and secret hideouts. There’s a twist in the middle of the book that takes this book from enjoyable, but predictable, to absorbing and original. I can’t wait for PG5′s next adventure!

• A new release by HQN, so I was sort of bewildered by the unevenness of the writing. SL has become one of my favorite romance writers, and kept telling myself, “Not every book can be a winner.” When I turned to the last page I realized it was a reissue of an earlier (1993!) book. Phew! It just shows me how much SL has developed as a writer.The story was a promising Regency plot: 4 sisters, 4 rakes in a battle of wiles and wits. However, there was a frustrating lack of focus. I really wanted to settle in with Caro and Max’s story line, but kept getting pulled away into other story lines. It just felt like depth was sacrificed for breadth. I think I’m going to get my Cynster’s backlist out.

• The excerpt from this book sucked me in so much, that I broke my “must read series in order” rule, and bought the ebook. (Book 1, To Taste Temptation is waiting for me to pick it up at the library, when I’m over this cold.) Jasper and Mellisande were great. I loved Melisande’s restrained demeanor which belied her years long unrequited love for Jasper. I really felt for Jasper and cheered for him as he worked thru his horrific history.

Lisa Kleypas: A Wallflower Christmas (Wallflowers series, book 5)-12/2/8. Excerpt on author’s site.

• A fun, light read! It was great to re-visit the Wallflowers. However, I think the books brevity (it’s only 224 pp, whereas Scandal in Spring was 384 pp), meant that if felt a bit rushed, especially at the end. I liked Hannah, and how she fit in with the Anabelle, Lillian, Daisy and Evie. And, when they join together to help Hannah out, it’s pure gold!

Ally Blue: Oleander House (Bay City Paranormal Investigations, book 1)-EBOOK 12/1/8. Excerpt on publisher’s site.

• I love it when taking a risk on a new series pays off! This is a M/M parnormal romance/urban fantasy(?—I hate pigeon-holing these things) The horror/paranormal elements were spooky. The chemistry between Sam and Bo worked for me. Looking forward to book 2!

• Another re-read/listen. I really enjoyed revisiting Sookie’s early days. Johanna Parker is a great narrator. Sookie is tougher than I remember her. Eric is awesome!

Lisa Kleypas: Then Came You-EBOOK 11/28/8

• I loved Lily, from the time I read about her in Dreaming of You, so it was great to read her story. Lily is a great character, and the story line with her daughter was original and absorbing. Of course, some of my favorite parts are the ones with Derek Craven. It makes me want to go back and re-read Dreaming of You!

Kelley Armstrong: Bitten (Otherworld series, book 1)-AUDIOBOOK 11/27/8. Excerpt from author’s site.

• This is a “re-listen”. It was great to revisit the beginning of KA’s awesome series, and remember why it’s so compelling. Elena is a great protagonist, and I forgot how much of a sarcastic sense of humor she has in her narration.

Lisa Kleypas: Worth Any Price (Bow Street Trilogy, book 3)-EBOOK 11/27/8

• I am such a sucker for a tortured hero. Nick Gentry was all that and more. I broke my own rule and read this trilogy out of order. The revenge plot of Someone To Watch Over Me made it a DNF for me, but I liked this one so much, I’ve already requested Lady Sophia’s Lover from the library (we’ll see how I do with that revenge plot.)

Deanna Raybourn: Silent in the Sanctuary (A Lady Juila Grey Mystery, book 2) 11/26/8. Excerpt on publisher’s site.

• This was a really enjoyable mystery. I’m liking Lady Julia more and more. Reading the book was a BIG improvement over the audiobook, since the narrator for book 1 was awful. I’m looking forward to the next one in the series coming out next March!

• I love seeing the gentle romance between Isabel and Jamie unfold. AMS is great at capturing the “little moments” in a relationship. Tho’ Isabel’s natural restraint and reserve are sometimes hard to understand.

• This series just gets better and better for me. I become immersed in Isabel’s life when I listen to this series on audiobook.

• A very satisfying conclusion to the original 4 Wallflower stories. Matthew’s backstory was really interesting and touching. I’m looking forward to A Wallflower Christmas (it’s on request from the library.)

• Another totally wonderful installment in the Wallflowers series. I was so excited to read this one, especially when the previous book left us with Evie propositioning/proposing to St Vincent. I love how these 2 came together. ETA: This is my favorite of the original 4 in the series.

• I really loved the introduction of the new character, Finn, but the split perspective between 5 main characters distracted from the action.

• Funny and fast paced. A little too much in common with JE’s awesome Stephanie Plum series, and the fledgling Alex Barnaby series suffers for the comparison.

• A good story with some real history and dramatic and sexual tension between the two protagonists, federal agents Taylor and Will.

Sarah Mayberry: Anything for You-EBOOK 11/18/8. Category romance.

• Cute romance. I love the friends to lovers theme, but was frustrated with how the hero found his lifelong platonic friend irresistable the second he saw her after  a makeover. But, a minor quibble, really.

• Wow! I feel like I’ve been listening to this forever. It was very good, though I think it would have benefitted by another round with an editor. That being said, lots of things happen which advance the story of Eragon and Saphira. Gerard Doyle’s narration is EXCELLENT, as ever.

• OK, so I’ve been a little obsessed with this series lately. I tend to do that. I’m just really blown away by the way the characters have grown thru the series. Also, the story line in this one was great!
