May 2009 New Releases

May 6, 2009 at 6:00 am 16 comments

I’m a little late getting this post out, but things have been so hectic lately, that I’ve been a little too brain-dead to post. I’m really excited about May’s releases, and have already requested quite a few of them from the library. The tricky part will be to remain patient while waiting for them to come in! 🙂

Here are May’s releases:

May 1, 2009: Blood from Stone (Retrievers series, book 6) by Laura Anne Gilman

Here is a book description from the author’s site:

Wren Valere’s job is driving her crazy. She’s still Manhattan’s most sought-after Retriever, but after last year’s deadly confrontation with the Silence, all this magic-user wants is a break. With her apartment going co-op and her relationship with the demon P.B. putting stress on her romance with partner Sergei, is Wren finally ready to settle down to a more stable existence?

Not likely.

Because when you’re good, trouble always finds you. Wren’s next assignment puts her on the wrong side of a child-snatcher — and a collision course with her past. But to save a friend—and protect her future — Wren must pull off the most important Retrieval of her life . . . and for once magic isn’t on her side.

May 5, 2009: Hard and Fast (Fast Track series, book 2) by Erin McCarthy

Here is a book description from the publisher’s site:

An experiment in romance…

New to Charlotte, stock car racing country, graduate student Imogen Wilson meets Ty McCordle, a driver who inexplicably has her pulse racing.  After an encounter at the track with a woman whose main goal in life is to marry a driver, Imogen realizes she’s hit on the perfect thesis for her Sociology degree. If she follows The Rules on how to get a man, can she steer her way to into the hearts of the drivers and establish their dating—and mating—patterns?

That’s testing the limits of passion.

Although sexy and reckless Ty is the ideal test subject, she knows she can’t pursue him for the sake of science. Yet he’s the one who’s chasing after her, and Imogen realizes that she actually wants to be caught. A southern gentleman like Ty won’t fail to disappoint, will satisfy all her curiosity—and make all the risks worthwhile…

Here is the description from the author’s site:

Except for Sookie Stackhouse, folks in Bon Temps, Louisiana, know little about vamps—and nothing about weres.

Until now. The weres and shifters have finally decided to reveal their existence to the ordinary world. At first all goes well. Then the mutilated body of a were-panther is found near the bar where Sookie works—and she feels compelled to discover who, human or otherwise, did it.

But there’s a far greater danger threatening Bon Temps. A race of unhuman beings—older, more powerful, and more secretive than vampires or werewolves—is preparing for war. And Sookie finds herself an all-too human pawn in their battle.

Hope Stillwater inhabited that mansion in 1906. Raw desire has formed a conduit between these two passionate souls who are separated by the barrier of time.

Now he has to have her.

Intoxicated by each other’s presence, Ryan and Hope are closer than ever to crossing that inviting boundary between two worlds. Tercelle Amberley’s betrothed is a powerful Darkborn nobleman, but her illicit lover came to her through the daytime. When men come for the boys, Balthasar is saved by the intervention of his Lightborn neighbor — and healed by the hands of his wife, Telmaine. Soon he finds himself drawn deeper into political intrigue and magical attacks, while Telmaine must confront a power she can no longer keep sheathed in gloves, a power she neither wants nor can control.

Alone, terrified, and trapped in an icy town, Dru’s going to need every inch of her wit and training to stay alive. Can she trust the boy who is just a little too adult–and just happens to get bit by a werwulf? Or the strange blue-eyed boy who tells her she’s heir to a long-forgotten power? Can she even trust her own instincts?Because Dru is not the first in her family to be killed by the darkness of the Real World. The monsters have decided to hunt back–and now Dru has to figure out who to trust, who to fight, and when to run. And not incidentally, she has to figure out how she’s going to get out of this alive.

Here is a book description from the author’s site:

Everyone does it. Dies, I mean. I found this out for myself on my seventeenth birthday—which also happened to be the night of my prom—when I was killed in a car accident. It was a carefully planned scything, just a small moment in the battle between light reapers and dark, heaven and hell, choice and fate.

My name is Madison Avery, and I’m here to tell you that there’s more out there than you can see, hear, or touch. Because I’m seeing it, hearing it, touching it, living it.

May 29, 2009: Santa Olivia by Jacqueline Carey

Here is a book description from the author’s site:

Loup Garron was born and raised in Santa Olivia, an isolated, disenfranchised town next to a US military base inside a DMZ buffer zone between Texas and Mexico. A fugitive “Wolf-Man” who had a love affair with a local woman, Loup’s father was one of a group of men genetically-manipulated and used by the US government as a weapon. The “Wolf-Men” were engineered to have superhuman strength, speed, sensory capability, stamina, and a total lack of fear, and Loup, named for and sharing her father’s wolf-like qualities, is marked as an outsider.

After her mother dies, Loup goes to live among the misfit orphans at the parish church, where they seethe from the injustices visited upon the locals by the soldiers. Eventually, the orphans find an outlet for their frustrations: They form a vigilante group to support Loup Garron who, costumed as their patron saint, Santa Olivia, uses her special abilities to avenge the town.

Aware that she could lose her freedom, and possibly her life, Loup is determined to fight to redress the wrongs her community has suffered. And like the reincarnation of their patron saint, she will bring hope to all of Santa Olivia.

Either the new Sookie Stackhouse book is a cross-over with the Harry Dresden — or you have the wrong book blurb. 😉

    Darkborn looks interesting.

  • 2. AmyC  |  May 6, 2009 at 9:39 am

Hey Renne, Only one of them was on my list, Daring Time, but the covers on all of them are wonderful! I can’t wait to start Daring Time. A little time travel is always fun :).

  • 3. Jill D.  |  May 6, 2009 at 10:18 am

I just finished Hard and Fast yesterday and it was phenomenal!!! I enjoyed it better than Flat-Out Sexy. There is a lot of really great dialogue between Imogen and Ty in this book. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

  • 4. Renee  |  May 6, 2009 at 10:44 am

AmyC: I’m really enjoying Wicked Burn right now, and can’t wait to check out Daring Time. 🙂

JillD: Lucky girl! FOS really blew me away, and I’m picking up Hard and Fast this week.

  • 5. Brie  |  May 6, 2009 at 11:51 am

Nice covers all around. Santa Olivia looks interesting. I will be looking out for it.

  • 6. AmyC  |  May 6, 2009 at 12:11 pm

I just noticed that you were reading Wicked Burn! It’s a pretty wicked and hot little number, eh?

Hmmm, I’m thinking I may have to pick up Flat out Sexy. I can’t seem to make up my mind if I should or not!

  • 7. Renee  |  May 6, 2009 at 4:14 pm

Brie: Doesn’t it? I still have Kushiel’s Dart on my tbr, but this seems like a real departure for the author.

    Amy: ::fans self:: Totally! 😛
FOS is really good. And hot. I highly recommend it!
I just got the ebook for Hard and Fast. Can’t wait to dig in!

  • 8. nath  |  May 7, 2009 at 9:34 am

    Lots of nice covers! 🙂

Hmmm, only Hard and Fast is on my list and I’m glad that Jill enjoyed it so much! 🙂

    Is Tekgrrl YA?

    • 9. misscz  |  May 7, 2009 at 9:42 am

No. I believe it’s a sequel to her SHOMI book, Phenomenal Girl 5. I haven’t read it, but I believe the characters are suppose to be superheroes.

  • 10. Tracy  |  May 7, 2009 at 12:16 pm

The covers on these are all great! Some really great books coming out this month! woohoo! A book lovers dream. 🙂

  • 11. bookdaze  |  May 7, 2009 at 1:13 pm

I’m with misscz – “Darkborn” looks intriguing (and I love the cover).

I read the first Laura Anne Gilman book in that series, and never picked up the second. I don’t think I really connected with the characters, IIRC. Do you think the series has grown better?

Strange Angels – I abandoned her Dante Valentine series umm… because I didn’t like the heroine and I hated the cliffhanger endings. But I admit I am curious about this one, looking forward to reading your thoughts on this!

  • 12. bookdaze  |  May 7, 2009 at 1:31 pm

I just went via your link to Alison Sinclair’s site, and she has a Sharon Shinn blurb on the cover! I am so getting this – thanks for highlighting this 😀

  • 13. Renee  |  May 7, 2009 at 8:28 pm

nath: It’s not YA. I liked Phenomenal Girl 5. It was a fun read! I’m sure I’ll be picking up Tekgrrl up at some point.

Tracy: Hard to keep up with all the releases. That Darkborn cover is my favorite, this month.

    Li: Yes! Isn’t it pretty?
I enjoy LAG’s Retrievers series. It’s a little more low-key than other ufs, but I really like the world, which is pretty unique. In fact, Free Fall (Retrievers, book 4) is my TBR Challenge book this month, for the “friends to lovers” theme! 🙂
Yes, Dante. I have a complicated relationship with that series. I LOVED it, esp books 1 & 2, but by the end (book 5) Dante was totally making me crazy (actually, even by book 3), but I was so connected to her that I couldn’t stop reading! DV is like the friend that makes me crazy, but I just can’t stop being friends. lol I will be getting to Strange Angels, tho.
Ooh, glad you’re going to check out Darkborn! 🙂

  • 14. orannia  |  May 9, 2009 at 1:51 am

Oh, thank you for the heads up Renee! I am hanging out for Darkborn and Hard & Fast 🙂

  • 15. Renee  |  May 9, 2009 at 8:33 am

    orannia: YW! 🙂
I’m excited, cause I was able to request Darkborn from the library (it’s on order.) I also bought H & F this past week.

  • 16. Christine  |  May 14, 2009 at 1:28 pm

I LOVE the cover of Santa Olivia. I’m thinking of adding it to my list on that merit alone. But the premise does sound cool, too.
